Girona hopes that with the new tourism regulations they can be "more restrictive" in areas like Barri Vell

The Girona City Council positively values the new regulation approved by the Generalitat that will mean the elimination of 28,000 homes of this type in 47 Catalan municipalities within a maximum period of five years.

The deputy mayor and councilor for Ecological Transition and Urban Transformation, Cristina Andreu, celebrates that tourist use licenses are no longer "permanent". "Being able to withdraw the infinite permanence gives us a margin of action for the municipalities which is very positive", he says.

Although the city does not exceed the ratio of 10 homes per 100 inhabitants stipulated by the Generalitat standard, it does present high concentrations in the Barri Vell and the Mercadal. In September it had 486 homes of this type, a figure that represented 14.66% of the total homes in this area.

The councilor trusts that the new regulation "will allow us to avoid concentrations that are detrimental to life in the neighborhoods." "If this new regulation allows us to be even more restrictive in some areas that cause problems, we will take advantage of the instrument," she said.

Even so, the councilor wanted to make it clear that it is necessary to study carefully what the higher-ranking regulation of the Generalitat says and whether it can be applied by sectors to see how the municipal regulations, approved in September and which came into force, can be readjusted. force just ten days ago.

This municipal regulation established a maximum limit of 4% of housing for tourist use for the entire city, although each neighborhood could have a maximum of 15%. Something that only happened in the Barri Vell. "We would consider revoking the license if we exceed what the decree says," says Andreu.

In Girona, which according to the latest census has about 100,000 inhabitants, in September it had 830 tourist apartments and shared homes. A figure that does not exceed the maximum ratio of 10 apartments for tourist use per hundred inhabitants.
