Girona adds the first electric buses to its fleet

Girona has incorporated the first electric buses into the fleet of Trnasports Municipal del Gironès (TMG). These are two 12-meter-long vehicles that travel on the L1 lines, between the neighborhoods of Montjuïc and Avellaneda, and the L2, between the Josep Trueta Hospital and Avellaneda.

The commissioning of these vehicles has forced drivers and workshop personnel to receive specific training. In addition, two electrical points have been installed for night-time charging of buses in the depots.

The two vehicles have been purchased for 994,000 euros. An amount that has been partially financed by the European Union, thanks to Next Generation funds.

In this subsidy there are other actions planned such as the creation of twelve new Girocleta stations, the public bike loan service or the creation of a dissuasive parking at the Mas Gri roundabout. It is also planned to build a cycle path linking Girona with Vilablareix.

TMG's fleet currently consists of 35 buses, whose average age is 9.2 years. In recent years, the City Council has been renewing the fleet, basically with natural gas vehicles, while manufacturers developed the autonomy of the batteries to guarantee the service. Until now, there were ten buses that ran on gas and the rest on fossil fuels.
