The Forest Agents of the Community of Madrid located yesterday, Wednesday, a specimen of an Iberian lynx, in Boadilla del Monte, in the vicinity of the city of Banco Santander, as reported by Emergencies 112 Community. Possibly, it is the specimen that a few days ago was photographed by a neighbor in the vicinity of the Madrid municipality of Sevilla La Nueva and whose images were disseminated on social networks.
The troops have redirected him to a safe forest area, since he was heading to a road junction, where he was at high risk of being run over. In addition, they have collected a hair sample to be genetically analyzed.
The device has been organized based on the information that appeared a few days ago about the sighting between the municipalities of Villanueva de Perales and Sevilla La Nueva by the aforementioned neighbor.
Last week the Community of Madrid Ministry of the Environment confirmed the return of the lynx to the region, after decades absent, through a wild specimen from Toledo.
The cat was photographed on several occasions and these images have been inspected in detail by regional technicians, who have determined that it is, without any doubt, this animal.
The general director of Environment and Sustainability of the Community, Luis del Olmo, explained that there have been numerous releases of lynx, to promote their reintroduction, in Castilla-La Mancha. "We work with a scenario of natural colonization of the Iberian lynx, with the introduction of specimens to Madrid through the corridors of the Alberche and Guadarrama valleys," he indicated.
The Iberian lynx working group, coordinated by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), has prepared a report with the results of the population monitoring carried out in 2022 by the communities with a stable presence of the species (Andalusia, Castilla -La Mancha and Extremadura) and by the Portuguese authorities.
The document shows that the Iberian lynx population has reached 1,668 individuals in both countries. This figure constitutes the numerical maximum registered since there are conservation programs for the species, and represents a very significant increase, taking into account that in 2002 fewer than 100 specimens had been counted.
