In this series of photographs in La Vanguardia Readers' Photos we can see how the fallow deer graze in the castle of Sant Ferran in Figueres, in Alt Empordà.
The fallow deer is a species of deer native to the Mediterranean region. It differs from the other large European deer, the common deer (Cervus elaphus), in its smaller size, its webbed antlers and its reddish-brown coat of hair dotted with white specks in spring and summer (occasionally with a dark band on the back). .
In the Empordà you can see fallow deer in various places, but, on this occasion, we see them walking around the grounds of the Sant Ferran castle.
Located on a hill, it is a large fortress built during the 18th century. It occupies an area of 32 hectares and the cisterns, located under the parade ground, hold 9 million liters of water.
The Sant Ferran castle, which had a capacity for 4,000 soldiers, is the largest monument in Catalonia and is considered the largest modern fortress in Europe.
