Does Yolanda Díaz want to compete with Compromís in the Valencian Community?

The representative of Sumar for Alicante, Txema Guijarro, advanced it yesterday on Cadena SER, and his words generated no small surprise yesterday in Compromís. He stated that Yolanda Díaz's training is considering establishing itself in the Valencian Community to develop its structure at the territorial level. Process that should be completed in the spring of 2024. "We are in the initial phase," he said.

He also said that this process "will be carried out respecting and expanding the agreements with Compromís in order to achieve a better confluence of the left." But, in the absence of details of this operation, the idea that Sumar could encourage its own project in the Valencian Community was yesterday flatly ruled out by leaders of Compromís, both Més Compromís and PV Initiative. "Yolanda Díaz is not going to set up a Sumar delegation in the Valencian Community," they agreed. And they limited Guijarro's statements to tensions in that political space in Alicante.

Amparo Piquer, general secretary of Més Compromís, also issued a statement in which she pointed out that "in the Valencian Country there is a force that is Compromís, a reference for the left, Valencianism, a green and feminist force. Therefore, we do not consider It is neither convenient nor necessary for another organization to be implemented because there is already a leading political party in this space. She also added that "we have a prior agreement of non-electoral competition in the Valencian Country; Sumar already recognizes Compromís as the main force of the Valencian left."

Sumar and Compromís, or vice versa, joined forces to run in the 23-J elections. The Valencians obtained two deputies in Congress. The collapse of Unides Podem in the Valencian 28-M elections would explain the interest of a sector of Sumar in opening a space to the left of the PSPV and as an alternative to Compromís. It's nothing new. The Valencian left-wing market has always contained voters uncomfortable with socialism and distant from the Valencian postulates of Compromís: Esquerra Unida is the clearest example.

In the regional elections of last March 28, Unides Podem and Compromís presented themselves separately, as in 2019 and 2015. In the May meeting, the demobilization of a large part of that electorate was evident, which left the followers of Yolanda Díaz and Pablo Iglesias, preventing the Botànic government from being revalidated with PSPV and Compromís. The harsh anger generated between both leaders since Sumar's presentation on April 2 in Magariños is observed as one of the causes of the electoral failure in the regional elections.

Compromís sources recognize that in the province of Alicante there is a "certain drive to activate a space that Podemos has lost." But they added that, at this time, "Yolanda Díaz is not thinking about competing against Compromís in the Valencian Community." And they add that "it would mean breaking the complicity achieved on 23-J; if Compromís goes to the Mixed Group, Sumar will be left with almost nothing in Congress."

The calendar is also very dense. Guijarro talks about trying to consolidate a territorial project in March 2024, but on those dates the Galician elections can be held and, very close to them, the Basque elections. To then begin the European campaign. A leader of Compromís warns: "until September or October 2024 it will be difficult to be able to talk about an organic project in all the forces involved."
