Criminal machismo rebounds this summer: 25 women murdered by gender violence

More than half of the murders due to gender violence in 2023 have been perpetrated this summer, in which there has been an increase in femicides in Spain: 25 women have been murdered by their partners or ex-partners in the summer months, 4 of them in the Valencian Community.

Between June 21 and 8:50 a.m. on September 23, the end of summer, there has been a "recrudescence of sexist terror", as defined by the Government's delegate against Gender Violence, Victoria Rosell, the last concentration of four murders in less than 48 hours in September.

Two fatalities in the last days of June, eight in July, seven in August and another eight in September. As a result of these sexist crimes committed in the summer, 21 minors have been orphaned.

These concentrations of murders have led the Ministry of Equality to convene crisis committees to analyze the spikes in July, August and September (the latter will take place on October 4) together with the Interior, Justice, Prosecutor's Office, the General Council of the Judiciary and the autonomous communities in which cases have been registered.

There have been eight women murdered in Andalusia (32%), six in Catalonia (24%), four in the Valencian Community (16%), two in Madrid (8%) and one case in Navarra (4%), La Rioja , Canary Islands, Castilla y León and Murcia

July and August are the months of greatest risk for victims of sexist violence. According to official statistics, they have the highest number of murders since 2003, 127 in July and 114 in August. The greater coexistence with the aggressor and the increase in mobility and social relationships (and the abuser's perception that he is losing control over the victim) due to the holidays could be the causes underlying this greater danger.

This summer's spike is having an impact on the global number of femicides. After a historic annual low of 49 murders of women by their partners or ex-partners was reached in 2021 and 2022, so far in 2023 there have been 48 fatalities, 17 more than in the same period of the previous year.

The 25 fatalities this summer are more than half of the 48 intimate femicides perpetrated in 2023, 52%.

Their names were Francy (35 years old), Vanesa (36 years old), Zhen Jiang (47 years old), Kirsty (36), Salwa (35), Ilham (38), Carmen (54), Carla (26), Elena (29) , Erica Vanessa (22), Zhour (27), Evarista (91), Juana (31), Soledad (50), Encarna (63), Charo (40), Raquel (58), Rosa (52), Maricel (46 ), Rosa María (71), Sandra (37), Nicola (51), Suzan Ann (80), Hanane (35) and Laura (41).

Of the 25 alleged feminicides, only four had a history of sexist violence, meaning that in 21 cases there were no previous complaints of abuse, 84%.

Seven of the attackers committed suicide after committing the crimes (28%), so they cannot be tried for their actions.

Since 2003, gender violence has killed 1,232 women in Spain and since 2013 a total of 423 minors have been orphaned as a result of femicides.
