Coquettish public laundry in Castelló d'Empúries

The charming public laundry of Castelló d'Empúries is not only a place to discover, since it is a Cultural Asset of Local Interest, but it is a space that creates a zen atmosphere that invites you to relax and meditate listening to the sound of the water from your source, as can be seen in the Photos of the Readers of La Vanguardia.

The laundry is located in the area known as the Pla de Sant Francesc, outside the walled nucleus of Castelló, following the flow of the Rec del Molí, after passing through the Farinera (current Ecomuseum).

With a more or less triangular floor plan, it has the shape of a porticoed atrium with a large central laundry room. The gallery is covered by a single-sided roof, made of Arab tiles, supported by a beam.

This roof rests on a series of Tuscan columns with a cylindrical base, with a smooth shaft and Doric capital, which sit on the laundry room.

The walls that delimit the enclosure and give access to the interior of the porch, are built by means of a succession of semicircular arches supported by square-shaped pillars and built with exposed brick.

Above the level of the porch, a series of rectangular pillars, like battlements, are topped by a wall. In the middle of the laundry room, the pump stands out, which acts as a fountain.

The public laundry of Castelló d'Empúries was built in 1863, but incorporates elements of the old convent of Sant Francesc, built in 1264.
