Climate activists cement golf holes to denounce "water waste"

Climate activists from Rebellion or Extinction (XR) have intervened in the last hours in up to ten golf courses in the provinces of Barcelona, Madrid, Valencia, Bizkaia and Navarra and on the island of Ibiza to denounce the "waste" of water that golf, in the midst of one of the worst droughts in history.

During this early morning, the activists have blocked holes with cement and have displayed banners and posters that read "Alert: drought!, "Golf closed for climate justice" or "Water is a common good", according to sources from the activist group .

From the organization they have recalled that just one hole in a golf course swallows more than 100,000 liters of water a day to maintain the grass that surrounds it (according to data from Ecologistas en Acción), and they have criticized "the irresponsibility and cynicism" of continue to allow this type of elitist leisure while Spain dries up.

"In Spain, 437 golf courses are irrigated every day", the activists have specified, who have stressed that the figure represents a higher water consumption than that of the populations of Madrid and Barcelona combined for an "entertainment" that barely enjoys 0 .6% of the population.

With this Sunday's action, the Extinction or Rebellion collective demands immediate democratic planning for the use of water, in which watering the grass on golf courses is restricted.
