Civil Protection maintains the strong risk of avalanches in Ribagorçana-Vall Fosca

Protecció Civil has closed the wind alert in the Pyrenees that began on Thursday and maintains the strong risk of avalanches (4 out of 5) in the Ribagorzana-Vall Fosca sector.

Above 2,000 meters on the north, northeast, east and northwest slopes, warnings are given of possible very thick wind slabs, which may fall naturally.

These avalanches can be large enough to reach valley floors and cover flat terrain (up to 50 meters).

Wind gusts from the southern component have exceeded 130 km/h in the high elevations of the Pyrenees and Montseny (147 km/h in Certascan, 136 km/h in Puig Sesolles and 130 km/h in Ulldeter).

The Generalitat Firefighters have responded to about forty warnings related to the gale, the majority in Girona, the northern and southern metropolitan areas.

Mainly, the services that have required the presence of the Firefighters have been to remove fallen trees and elements of facades that have fallen or threatened to fall on public roads, without causing any damage or major damage.

During the three days of the wind episode, the Operational Coordination Center of Catalonia (CECAT) has recorded 32 calls corresponding to minor incidents located in the provinces of Lleida, Barcelona and Girona.

The wind values recorded at low coastal levels during the episode were not particularly high, with records from coastal regions with gusts exceeding 50 km/h. However, the wind has contributed to the sea storm being continuous and with a lot of sea travel.
