Gastronomy is a topic that can spark intense debates and even identity fights, especially due to gastronomic differences between autonomous communities. An example of this is the recent controversy that has been generated by a thread published by the user @CeoDeVamos on the social network X in which he claims that Catalan gastronomy is "the worst Iberian gastronomy."
The thread, which already has more than 223,000 views, refers to and criticizes some representative dishes of Catalan cuisine, such as patatas bravas, calçots, Catalan cream and cava, and pa amb tomàquet. Regarding the latter two, the user assured that they are "a copy of creme brulé and champagne" and "it has to be a fucking joke." The reactions of other users were immediate to the thread's statements.
Most of the responses to the thread defend traditional Catalan gastronomy, and even make reference to other dishes: "The cannelloni are amazing, (they are not ours, but they have been cooked for a long time). The sanfaina, the panellets, the xuxos, the rice, the cheeses, the escalivada, the escudella (cooked in-house), mar i muntanya, al i oli (it's a mayonnaise, but great)", explains one of the users. Others also highlighted the fact that Catalonia is the autonomous community with the most Michelin Stars nationwide. However, the author of the thread defended that "haute cuisine is to traditional cuisine what motorcycles are to bicycles."
Eating in Galicia is not the same as in Andalusia, the Basque Country or Catalonia. Each autonomous community has representative recipes and ingredients that are a source of pride. In the Catalan case, we can do some of these with this compilation of traditional dishes to form our own opinion.
