Bildu censures Aragonès' "rush" with the referendum and calls for a calm debate

The spokesperson for EH Bildu in Congress, Mertxe Aizpurua, yesterday warned the president of the Generalitat, Pere Aragonès, that the call for a possible self-determination referendum is a “serious” matter that must be preceded by a “calm” debate. since, in his opinion, “hurry is a bad advisor in this matter.”

This is how the leader of the Abertzale coalition spoke when asked about the opinion article that Aragonès published yesterday in the British economic newspaper Financial Times in which he asks the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, for courage to agree on the sovereignty consultation and makes it clear that ERC will ensure that the PSOE leader fulfills all his commitments.

Aragonès points out that Sánchez must “demonstrate, beyond conciliatory words, that he really wants to resolve the sovereignty conflict with Catalonia”, which in his opinion involves holding a self-determination referendum, “as the United Kingdom did with Scotland and Canada with Quebec.” The ERC leader's claim occurred on the day that Congress hosted the first debate on the future amnesty law, and in the midst of a struggle between Junts and ERC to see who presents more merits to the pro-independence electorate.

Aizpurua showed respect for Aragonès's approaches, but warned that an overreaction by the Catalan independence movement could be counterproductive in the objective of achieving a consultation. The notice to ERC has special significance because it comes from someone who is its usual partner in the Cortes. For the Abertzale leader, a referendum is an issue “serious enough” for there to be “a serene, calm and slow debate.”
