Barcelona cuts down half a thousand dead trees due to drought

These days Barcelona is cutting down half a thousand trees planted in its road network that have recently died due to the drought. The photo shows the operation that took place a few days ago in the Plaza del Taxi.

Municipal sources detail that these withdrawals are the result of the ordinary inspections that technicians carry out on all the specimens in the city. The lack of rain also led to the recent felling of some 500 date palms. This summer, a specimen of this species broke and caused the death of a young woman in the Raval. Many date palms already slaughtered were in good condition, but the City Council preferred to be cautious. These palm trees do not tolerate drought well. In fact, none have been planted in Barcelona for years. Urban green managers opt for trees that are better adapted to this environment. Yesterday another tree fell, in Bon Pastor. There were no injuries. This year 157 trees have fallen, a figure in line with that recorded in 2022, when just over 200 fell.

Sources add that irrigation of trees on the city's road network has recently increased. Normally, trees planted in streets and squares are only watered during their first four years. This summer, the City Council began to regularly water about 1,500 specimens at different points. The streets, squares and parks of Barcelona have nearly 300,000 trees.
