Australian cyclist Rohan Dennis arrested for fatally hitting his wife

Australian cyclist Rohan Dennis, world time trial champion in 2018 and 2019, was arrested this Sunday in Australia in connection with the fatal collision of his wife, fellow cyclist Melissa Hoskins, according to ABC.

The South Australian Police reported this Sunday in a statement the arrest of a 33-year-old man accused of reckless driving resulting in death, among other charges, and released him provisionally pending a court hearing on March 13.

The authorities indicated that on Saturday afternoon they went to a residence in the city of Adelaide, in the south of the country, following the accident of a woman. The 32-year-old victim was hit by a van in front of her home. As a result of the impact she suffered serious injuries and was taken in critical condition to the hospital, where she died shortly after.

After the investigation, the Police, who in their statement avoid identifying those involved and do not specify the circumstances, proceeded to file charges against the man for "homicide by reckless driving and endangering human life."

The public channel ABC published that the detainee is the cyclist Rohan Dennis and the deceased is his wife, with whom he married in 2018 and with whom he had two children.

Melissa Hoskins, 32, was retired from professional cycling, a sport in which she was an Olympian at the 2021 and 2016 Games. She won five medals at the Track Cycling World Championships between 2012 and 2015.

Her husband, Rohan Dennis, has just retired as his contract with Jumbo-Visma expires. Throughout her career she collected several titles, the most notable being the two world championships in the individual road time trial; and on the track she was also two-time world champion in team pursuit.
