Arrested in Lleida for swindling 4,300 euros with the false family member in distress method

The National Police have arrested a 32-year-old man in Lleida for swindling 4,300 euros from a resident of Badajoz through the “relative in distress” fraud, after posing as his stepdaughter through telephone messages to ask for money with which deal with alleged invoices.

According to the police in a statement, the arrest took place last Wednesday of last week and is the result of the investigation carried out since the victim filed a complaint regarding these events last November in Badajoz.

The woman had received telephone messages from a person posing as her stepdaughter asking her for money “urgently” with which to pay some bills, after which she made various bank transfers.

The victim was later able to discover that she had been scammed, according to these sources.

The police investigation revealed that those responsible for the fraud were members of a criminal organization based in Catalonia.

Both the bank accounts provided for the payment of the transfers and the call center that provided the SIM cards from which the messages were sent were located in Lleida.

Last Wednesday, the agents arrested one of the alleged perpetrators of these events, a 32-year-old man with a criminal record, who has been brought to justice.
