Amazing journey to the bowels of the Earth in search of the salamander

In the massif of Sant Llorenç del Munt there are many cavities and sinkholes. One of them is the well-known Avenc de Can Torres, very close to the village of Matadepera, in the Western Vallès.

This morning we went down to this chasm with the pleasant surprise of finding beautiful salamanders at the bottom, where they find humidity and freshness, as seen in this report in La Vanguardia's Readers' Photos.

After having passed the Font de la Tartana, about two hundred meters further on, on the right, is the old path of Can Torres, which crosses the Can Solà del Racó torrent diagonally.

You have to follow the torrent parallel until turning to the right in the direction of the Sot del Canyer torrent. Before crossing it, advance fifty meters.

If you want to access from Can Torres, you must follow the path that is 400 meters southwest of the farmhouse, along the Sot del Canyer torrent, which goes down from the Collet de Cabrafiga to the Sot de la Codoleda torrent. .

Once the Sot del Canyer torrent meets the Les Saleres torrent, on the left a path rises where, just thirty meters further on, it leads directly to the chasm.

The salamander is a nocturnal animal, although it can be active during the day if the relative humidity is high, on rainy or foggy days.

During the day, the salamander takes refuge under leaf litter, fallen tree trunks or under stones. Although associated with deciduous or mixed forests, with clean and well-shaded streams, it also settles in rocks, bushes or meadows. And, in this case, we have discovered it in the very bowels of the Earth.
