Alicante recovers normal traffic after half a year of works

Mayor Luis Barcala was walking along General Marvá Avenue at noon today, Thursday, checking in person the opening to road traffic that occurred this morning. He thus fulfills the commitment that the city recovers normality in road traffic before the end of the year, after a long period of works that began both on the coastal front and on this important axis at the beginning of summer.

The walk that runs between the steps that give access to the Jorge Juan Institute and the Paseo de Canalejas has seen the road reduced to a single lane in both directions, with an additional one for buses and taxis in the Federico Soto section. The bike lanes - one on each side of the central boulevard, signposted in the opposite direction - were not yet fully operational, pending the completion of the work in some points where there are still workers working.

The paving and painting of the road, as well as the placement of the new streetlights, have already been completed, so this main artery of the city reopens to traffic in its entirety while its redevelopment is being finalized.

Barcala highlighted that “the result is extraordinary and the deadlines have been met; We can be satisfied with what we see, wider sidewalks, resurfacing with state-of-the-art materials, new street furniture and trees, and also calm with what we cannot see, the renewal of collectors and supply networks for irrigation. ”, which Aguas de Alicante executed.

Vehicle traffic is now normalized, as are urban transport lines that have resumed their usual routes.

The mayor has stressed that "the works always cause inconvenience, whether they are carried out at home or on the street, but when you see them finished and see the improvement and the benefit it generates for everyone, you understand that it has been worth it."

These three avenues would be one in any other city, since they form a straight line barely a thousand meters long, but the generous street map of Alicante gives them three names: General Marvá, Federico Soto and Doctor Gadea. In some sections, pedestrians and vehicles have already been circulating normally since November, but today the important junction of Plaza de Luceros, a stop for numerous bus lines and distributor of traffic entering and leaving the center, has been freed.

The action has involved an investment of 6.6 million euros, which includes the widening and new paving of the sidewalks, the elimination of barriers and the installation of a bike lane in both directions. In addition, the lights and traffic lights are renewed and new planters, as well as benches and litter bins, are installed. The works have allowed Aguas de Alicante to completely renew the collectors and the water network.
