A specimen of African lynx (caracal) has been seized by the Civil Guard from a woman who had it in her home in Marbella (Málaga) as she was unable to prove its legal origin, after finding out that it arrived by plane from Moscow in 2022 as a domestic cat.

The AAP Primadomus exotic mammal rescue center, located in Alicante, took charge of the animal about ten days ago, after an investigation of approximately one year, sources from the armed institute have explained to EFE.

The investigations began last year, following a report from a neighbor about the presence of a lynx in the garden of a home in Marbella, which had escaped from another house about 20 kilometers away and was captured by Veterinary Health personnel of the Marbella City Council, the Civil Guard reported this Friday in a statement.

The civil guards verified that it was a specimen of caracal, a threatened species according to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Flora and Fauna (CITES) and after locating its owner, they deposited the animal in Marbella during the investigation. .

After finding out that the animal had been irregularly transported by air in 2022 from Moscow, declared for entry into Spain as a domestic cat, and since its owner lacked an import permit under the CITES convention, the agents filed an administrative complaint against she.

The lynx, named Jakar, about two and a half years old and weighing about 20 kilos, has been delivered to the AAP Primadomus exotic mammal rescue center in the province of Alicante, which has the appropriate characteristics and capabilities for its care. .

The Seprona of the Civil Guard in Malaga keeps the investigation open in case the facts could constitute a crime against fauna and flora for the acquisition and possession of a species of wildlife considered protected.
