A quiet life destroyed by a cybercrime: the podcast that warns of the danger of 'phishing'

Alicia has a comfortable job, a stable relationship and a nephew she adores, but there is something in her life that doesn't quite fit. While she goes to a job interview, she receives a sudden phone call that will decisively change her life. Unbeknownst to her, she will find herself in an extreme situation, and she will soon discover that she has been the victim of a cybercrime. From there, Alicia will delve into an amazing plot, fast-paced, full of deception, manipulation, identity theft, and against the backdrop of Artificial Intelligence, which will help her understand what the world really looks like. happy in which he thought he lived.

This is the suggestive plot approach of Titania, an exciting sound thriller that immerses us in an everyday and recognizable world in which technologies have substantially changed the rules of the game. This fictional podcast is the first produced by Banco Santander, in collaboration with Podium Podcast. Made up of 8 episodes, each lasting twenty minutes and published weekly, its objective is to combine entertainment with useful information to make the public aware of the importance of cybersecurity and the need to protect themselves from possible dangers that may exist in the world. digital.

Alicia lives, throughout the chapters, a series of incidents, accompanied by other characters such as her sister Rebeca, her partner Juan, her friend Gabi or a mysterious woman named Julia, who help her to understand, in a didactic way, how to identify social engineering techniques, such as impersonation or phishing; and also the advantages of not providing personal or confidential information and always being discreet in online environments; the importance of creating strong and secure passwords; or the need to keep devices permanently updated to protect ourselves from possible vulnerabilities, among many other useful tips to mitigate the risks associated with the Internet.

Written by Manuel Bartual –winner of the Ondas Global Podcast 2023– and Juanjo Ramírez Mascaró, and performed by Nikki García, Francesco Carril, David Meneses, Olga Aguirre, Fernanda Orazi and Ana de Castro, a new chapter of Titania is available every week, since last May 23, on the Podium Podcast, Spotify, iVoox, Apple Podcasts and Amazon Music platforms. In addition, all of them can be heard both in Spain and in different Latin American countries, such as Mexico, Argentina or Colombia.

This podcast is a good example of the bank's firm commitment to cybersecurity and the protection of its customers as well as society as a whole; a commitment that is evident through two main axes: on the one hand, the continuous reinforcement of its internal security mechanisms, through robust infrastructures that provide its clients with simple and comfortable processes; and, on the other, helping said clients to develop and prosper in a digital environment marked by the constant evolution that technical innovations entail.

The issue is truly crucial for the whole of society. Last February of this year, the Government of Spain presented a strategic design to deal with the increase in cybercrime, through an extensive awareness and citizen awareness campaign. The figures obtained leave no doubt: in 2022, a total of 375,506 cybercrimes occurred, which is 72% more than those registered in 2019. This increase rises to 352%, if we take accumulated data as a reference. in 2015.

At Banco Santander they are convinced that it is not enough to have solid tools to protect yourself properly, but that it is also essential to know how to use them correctly. That is why information, education and training in this area are a real priority for the entity. This is manifested in other initiatives such as Una vida online y corrida, in which we are told that everyone – from any anonymous citizen to a world champion like Rafa Nadal, who participates in this campaign – is exposed to numerous cyber risks that we must be aware of. to raffle daily on the networks.

To the previous proposals we must add Cyber Heroes, a course that takes us into specific situations in which anyone can be involved in the digital environment, providing practical advice to protect ourselves against possible fraud, such as the aforementioned phishing or smishing (based on in deceptive messages that lure people into scams via email or text message). For its part, Cyber Guardian is a platform designed so that SMEs can properly defend themselves against the threats of the digital world and strengthen the protection of their businesses, with a capacity equivalent to that of large corporations.

As the Ministry of the Interior reported at the time, as conventional crime decreases, that which takes place through the network increases. In fact, today one in five crimes is committed through procedures related to cybercrime. Among those that have increased the most in the last 7 years, we find computer fraud (which has reached 442.9%) and computer forgery (up to 374.1%), followed by illegal access and interception (93 .6%) and threats and coercion (50.6%).
