A look at Wabi Sabi

In the Museum of the Mediterranean in Torroella de Montgrí it was possible to see the exhibition Una mirada a Wabi Sabi, by Agustí Fernández, which we have visited in Las Fotos de los Lectores de La Vanguardia.

The title refers to the acceptance of imperfection wherever it can or is believed to be found, knowing how to transform or revise it into harmony and beauty.

The work on display is a sample of photographs, both in black and white and color, of natural landscapes, those that can so often go unnoticed despite their beauty and that are captured here thanks to the photographer's transformative gaze.

Within Japanese Zen philosophy, the Wabi Sabi concept (which, as always, is untranslatable to the West) is based on the acceptance of imperfection, transforming it into harmony and beauty.

Standards of beauty and perfection in Western culture are based on superficial and increasingly selfishly immediate criteria. In Eastern cultures this is not the case and the concepts of balance, harmony or respect have always been valued more.
