17 injured in a collision between two trains in central Italy

A collision between two trains last night in central Italy caused 17 minor injuries, of which six had to be taken to hospital for treatment, and problems in railway traffic for hours. The collision occurred between a Frecciarossa, a high-speed train, and a regional convoy, when both were traveling at low speed on the Bologna-Rimini line, in the Faenza area, and at the moment the causes of the accident are unknown.

The rescue operations for all the passengers took place several hours later with the arrival of another train that took them to the Bologna Central station. The first images showed a regional train and a Frecciarossa 1000, both of the latest generation, damaged in their front parts but without having derailed.

After delays of several hours in railway circulation and the cancellation of several trains, at 5:00 a.m. this Monday (04:00 GMT), the public railway company Trenitalia reported that the situation had normalized.
