15 Futuro Vegetal activists arrested for actions committed in Madrid

The National Police has arrested at least fifteen activists from the environmental organization Futuro Vegetal in different parts of Spain for actions committed in Madrid, in a police operation that is still underway and in which new arrests are not ruled out.

The operation against the members of this organization, authors of several acts of radical environmentalism, began this morning and so far fifteen arrests have been made, police sources have informed EFE.

It is expected that the device, which is carried out by the General Information Commissioner (CGI), will result in more arrests.

The activists are being investigated for actions carried out in Madrid, although the National Police has not detailed what they are about or the criminal acts they are accused of.

In a message published on their X social network account, Futuro Vegetal assures that they are accused of belonging to a criminal organization.

"This morning fifteen colleagues have been arrested and accused by the National Police of belonging to a criminal organization, which represents almost thirty arrests for the group since December 1," the activists have written.

Among the latest actions carried out by the group in Madrid, those carried out in April stand out, one by two women who bathed naked in the fountain of the Royal Palace to denounce that the monarchy and the political class "actively participate in the plundering of resources natural" of the Iberian Peninsula.

Or in which two climate activists appeared with fire extinguishers in front of the Civil Registry of Madrid and stained the building with paint to demand an end to subsidies for livestock farming. They were identified and detained by police officers.

Precisely that same month, in April, the Police arrested fifteen members of the organization for their role in the protest actions carried out at the Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas airport, in front of Mercamadrid or at the headquarters of the PP and the PSOE.

In another message published in X, the activists consider the operation "irrational and disproportionate" and that it is part of "repressive processes." They also believe it is "unjustified" to attribute their membership to a criminal organization.

The Police, they have denounced, "continues to detain activists while they go about their normal lives, violating in an especially serious way fundamental rights" such as those of assembly, freedom of expression, association, public participation or freedom.

This group, framed in the Extinction Rebellion climate movement, has carried out various "high intensity" non-violent civil disobedience actions since January 2022 to warn against the climate crisis and ask to end aid to the meat industry.
