Sony reveals the price and details of PlayStation Portal, its portable to play by 'streaming'

After months of rumors, Sony has revealed the official name and price of its new remote gaming device. It is called PlayStation Portal and it will arrive at the end of the year for 219.99 euros.

The new Sony device will be used to play the PlayStation 5 games that the user has installed on their console in a portable way and via streaming. So it's not a standalone handheld like say the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck, it will require a Wi-Fi connection and won't be able to work without an original console to pair with.

Previously known as Project Q, PlayStation Portal consists of a wireless device where a DualSense controller and a high-definition LCD screen are merged to allow remote play of PS5 games.

As reported from the company's official blog, the device will repeat some of the features offered by the DualSense controller such as the haptic experience and adaptive triggers. Regarding the screen, it will have a dimension of 8 inches with 1080p resolution at 60hz and up to 60 frames per second.

PlayStation Portal will include a 3.5mm jack port to plug in headphones. At the same time, it will also be compatible with two new audio devices that will accompany its launch: the Pulse Explore wireless headphones and the Pulse Elite.

Pulse Explore (€219.99) are earbuds or buds that will include a charging case and will have microphones and a noise cancellation system. For its part, the Pulse Elite headphones (€149.99) are the headband or headset version, which will also incorporate a microphone and an integrated sound reduction system.

From the Japanese company they emphasize that both headphones use flat magnetic 'drivers' capable of transmitting a wider range of nuances. They also stress that they will be compatible with the new PlayStation Link wireless audio technology, which "offers low-latency audio without loss."

Sony has announced that they will share more details about the pre-order and release dates for the three devices soon.
