Vingegaard breaks the race and takes the lead in the fifth stage

The Dane Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo Visma) dealt a blow to the overall Dauphiné this afternoon by donning the yellow jersey after a solo display that led him to victory in the fifth stage, disputed between Cormoranche-sur-Saône and Salins-les- Bains, 191.1 km.

Barely 24 hours after giving the first warning in the time trial, Jonas Vingegaard (Hillerslev, 26 years old) took center stage and went on the offensive in a short second port close to the finish line to achieve an undisputed and significant victory. In just over three weeks, on July 1, the Tour starts in Bilbao and everything indicates that Jonas Vingegaard is willing to defend his crown. His main opponent, the Slovenian Tadej Pogacar, continues training in Sierra Nevada.

Vingegaard's attack allowed him to dislodge his compatriot Mikkel Bjerg from the yellow jersey. After 14 km in the breakaway and wearing the new yellow jersey, he reached the finish line in Salins les Bains with a time of 4:03:42, at an average of 47 km/h. The first chasers came within 33 seconds with Frenchman Julian Alaphilippe in front. The first Spaniard in the general is Carlos Rodríguez, fourteenth, he is the first at 3 minutes.

Vingeggard broke the race at the height of Thésy, second, a short climb but difficult to manage due to its 10 percent sections. The first to launch the attack was Richard Carapaz, 2.5 km from the top and 14 from the finish line. Only Vingegaard was able to follow the rude of the Ecuadorian. Carapaz froze before a Vingegaard attack 1.5 from the top. The Dane flew towards the goal and no one could follow him. The Tour winner crowned the summit with a 33-second advantage, a difference that he managed to maintain with a solo display that allowed him to savor the glory at the Salins-les-Bains finish line. It is victory number 21 in Vingegaard's record. Tomorrow, Friday, the sixth stage will join the towns of Nantua and Crest-Voland, of 170.2 km.
