The Women's Cup launches a new format for the 42nd edition of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE sailing

2019 was a year of great changes for the Copa del Rey MAPFRE with the premiere of the Women's Cup, which entered the 38th edition with the aim of reinforcing the participation of women in the sport of sailing. Now, five years later, the Real Club Náutico de Palma announces a new competition format for the 42nd edition of the queen of the Mediterranean event.

One of the main novelties will be that, on this occasion, the one-designs in which the competition will be held will be provided by the organization, which significantly reduces expenses and facilitates logistics for those crews that want to participate in the regatta. The director of the competition, Manuel Fraga, values this measure as "a way to support women's sailing and teams that are already consolidated in other circuits."

The competition format also presents new features. The teams will fight for the title, facing each other in a Round Robin - all against all - and in several elimination rounds until reaching the Grand Final. "It is a very competitive format and one that is very popular. It is a way of sailing that is having a lot of success and we believe that it can be the formula for the coming years," says Fraga.

This edition of the Women's Cup will begin on Wednesday the 31st, but registration and measurements will take place the days before. There will be, in total, four intense days of competition that will define the new champions of the Copa del Rey MAPFRE.
