The Premier League and the British Government reiterate their opposition to the Super League

The Premier League announced this Thursday that it rejects the European Super League and assured that fans have expressed their opposition to this concept on repeated occasions.

“The ruling (of the Court of Justice) does not endorse the so-called European Super League and the Premier League rejects any such concept. "Fans are of vital importance to the sport and they have made clear their opposition to this competition that worsens the link between domestic and European football," the Premier League said in a statement.

“The Premier League reiterates its commitment to the clear principles of open competition and highlighting the success of domestic and international club competitions.” Football, he added, “thrives thanks to the competitiveness created by promotion and relegation, the annual merit-based ranking of leagues, national cups and international club competitions and the historical rivalries that come with the weekends reserved for football. national football.”

According to the Premier, these principles are included in the revision of the Premier League owners' charter introduced in June 2022 that aims to improve the collective strength and competitiveness of the league for the benefit of sport.

Furthermore, he emphasizes that since 2021, the Premier League, along with the rest of the entities, has strengthened its rules to avoid another situation like the one in April of that year when the Super League was created.

"The Premier League will continue a constructive and open dialogue with relevant football bodies to see how to protect and improve the balance between domestic competitions and international football."

For its part, the British Government insisted on its intention to approve this year the reform of English football which, among other measures, aims to prohibit clubs from joining competitions outside UEFA, FIFA and the Premier League.

"The attempt to create a disruptive competition was a defining moment in English football and universally condemned by fans, clubs and the Government. We took the decisive action at that time to carry out football governance reform, which called for the creation of an independent regulator," the British Ministry of Culture and Sport said in a statement.
