The week of Three Kings will be marked by cold and frost in Spain, phenomena that will be preceded by rain in the southern half of the peninsula, according to the special forecast of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet). On Saturday, January 6, an arctic air mass will enter the north of the peninsula, which will lead to a new drop in temperatures, which will continue throughout the weekend.
This Wednesday, the Atlantic cold front that entered Galicia this Tuesday will advance towards the southeast, causing rainfall in much of the interior of the peninsula, but without reaching the Mediterranean area. According to the agency, increases in minimum temperatures are expected except in the northwest third, with frosts losing extension and maximums with slight increases in the center, Ebro valley and Mediterranean coast.
For Thursday and Friday, this last eve of Three Kings' Day, this cold front is expected to continue leaving rainfall in the southern half of the peninsula, more intense in western Andalusia, less likely in the extreme southeast. At the same time, a new cold front will enter the northwest accompanied by an outbreak of polar air, which will lead to rain in almost the entire country.
The snow level, which on the 4th will be around 1400-1600 meters, is likely to drop to around 800-1000 meters on the 5th, accompanied by a decrease in rainfall.
During the Three Kings weekend, Saturday the 6th and Sunday the 7th, an anticyclone is expected in the British Isles and a storm in the Mediterranean Sea. This configuration is favorable to the progressive entry of an arctic air mass through the north of the peninsula, explains Aemet. Therefore, there will be a new drop in temperatures on both days, with greater uncertainty on Sunday, January 7.
Frost will cover a good part of the interior of the peninsula, with less probability in the Ebro, Guadiana and Guadalquivir valleys. According to a special forecast, rainfall will probably be limited to the Cantabrian Sea and northeast of the Balearic Islands, with a snow level close to eight hundred meters in the north and a thousand meters in the Balearic Islands.
