Urkullu denounces in an institutional statement the anti-democratic drift

The Lehendakari, Iñigo Urkullu, used an unusual format in his public communication to harshly censure the tone that the protests against the Spanish Government have taken and, in particular, the position of those who "for years" have fueled these "attitudes of confrontation". In a solemn institutional communication recorded in Ajuria Enea, he described them as "accomplices", "correspondingly responsible" for what is happening and "irresponsible" for their attitude. The leader of the Basque Executive also called to call off the wave of protests that "serve as an excuse to generate hatred, rancor and violence".

This request was obviously addressed to the leaders of the PP, who in the lehendakari's opinion are "playing with democracy", with the risks this entails. "Democracy is too fragile to play with. These attacks are unacceptable in a State of law", he said.

Urkullu's statements obey a concern for the future of representative democracy that he has expressed for years and that, in his opinion, requires politicians to offer a horizon of stability, coexistence and certainty that has not yet arrived. “We are witnessing an anti-democratic social drift all over the world. Also in Spain. The events that have occurred in recent days are unacceptable, very serious and worrying. These are events caused by fascist ideological groups and promoted by political and social sectors that claim to defend democracy", he warned in his institutional communication.

According to the Basque president, this situation "concerns everyone without exception". "Political parties, representative institutions of society and the rule of law, social agents and media", actors who, according to Urkullu, must face "a shared mission" and put a stop to this anti-democratic drift .

Finally, the Lehendakari called on the PP to condemn "without excuses or justifications" the violence of the last few days. "Faced with this situation, there are only two options: feed populism, manipulation, violence and an authoritarian system; or defend representative democracy, respect for plurality and institutions", defended the lehendakari.
