Treasury monitors cryptocurrencies with 328,000 notices in 2022 income

The start of the income statement is always frantic. Yesterday, specific moments were recorded when 1,500 declarations per minute entered the Tax Agency's computer system. At 10 in the morning, 470,000 declarations had already been submitted, and in the afternoon, more than a million. They are the taxpayers in the most hurry and are supposed to be entitled to a refund, although they will have to wait 48 hours for the payment to take effect.

It was the start of a campaign that will last until June 30 and in which the Treasury hopes to achieve 20% more net income than in the previous year and focuses surveillance on cryptocurrency holders. "The operations with cryptocurrencies are growing exponentially", said the director general of the Tax Agency, Soledad Fernández, so that "the normal thing" is that there is also more information and more warnings. To be exact, a total of 328,000 notices for those holding these virtual currencies to remind them of their obligation to declare them. This is a considerable increase on the 233,000 notices issued last season.

The recipients of these notifications are not only the regulars of cryptocurrencies. There are also 807,000 alerts for those with income in other countries (856,000 in 2021) and 661,000 for rental property owners (713,000 in 2021). They are taxpayers who, when they enter the system to consult the data, a warning will pop up to remind them that the Treasury has records of products potentially liable to be declared.

With these and many other sources of income, the Treasury calculates that this year's campaign will give a net result of 6,502 million euros, compared to 5,389 million in 2021, an increase that is achieved thanks to the increase in income and the decrease in returns.

Specifically, the Tax Agency expects to increase its income by 5.6% compared to 2021, to a total of 16,448 million euros; while refunds will fall by 2.4% and will remain at 9,946 million. In this way, there will be 13.6 million declarations entitled to a refund, which represents 60% of the total of 22.9 million that will be submitted. These declarations with the right to refund decrease compared to the previous year, while the positive ones increase by 14%, reaching 7.6 million.

If the forecast is an increase in income from the income statement, on the contrary income from assets will decrease, due to the tax allowances that have been adopted by several autonomous communities. It is a reduction of 3.1% in declarations, which will remain at 223,000, and an even higher decrease in income, of 3.7%, which will add up to 1,287 million euros. "Without these community bonuses there would have been an increase in both the number of asset declarations and their amount", said the director general of the Tax Agency, Soledad Fernández.
