The three best AIs in depth

On February 22, Nvidia, the main producer of chips for artificial intelligence, presented its economic results. They were so surprising that many interpreted them as a crucial clue that artificial intelligence (AI) is real, not a bubble that can burst at any moment. But many doubts remain in the air. The main thing: which artificial intelligence is better?

ChatGPT remains the most promising, but there are two others that also shine brightly: Google's Gemini and the recently announced Claude 3. Although not new, its creators include there are people from the team that developed ChatGPT and in the last update it has taken a big step forward. So much so that it can be considered a very valid third option in the field of chatbots, or conversational artificial intelligence.

La Vanguardia has thoroughly tested the paid versions of ChatGPT, Gemini and Claude 3 (all three can be used for free with some limitations). To test them we asked them for rigorous information for research, we asked them to read texts and summarize them, to answer e-mails, to do household accounting calculations and to tell us everything they see in a image, be it a photo or a complex diagram.

A warning. These three artificial intelligences, from time to time, provide erroneous data. Some are even made up. Therefore, it is convenient to verify everything.

An interesting trick we've used is to compare data across all three. G emini, for example, dominates internet browsing. This is ideal for checking whether the books suggested by ChatGPT when asked for a bibliography are actually online.

Two clarifications that are important. These artificial intelligences cannot generate images. ChatGPT 4 uses DALL-E. This is an independent AI, created by OpenAI. Gemini has started generating images, but it's still in testing and the feature can only be used in some countries.

There are many artificial intelligences capable of generating images. One of the best is Adobe Firefly, which creates them from a text description, as photographs or as illustrations. Very soon, Firefly will be integrated into the free Adobe Express app, which is increasingly popular among content creators.

It should also be clarified that only the creators of ChatGPT have clearly bet on us being able to use AI on the phone. Something that surprises, especially in the case of Gemini.

Google has only released one application of its AI on Android and with restrictions. It has even been reported that Gemini Nano, a version designed for phones, will not be able to be installed on the Pixel 8, one of the last two phones released by the company. A data that warns of how Google is taking somewhat erratic steps in the development of its AI.

This is important, since ChatGPT, in the mobile version, allows us to chat at all hours. And not just in front of a computer screen. In the way that allows us to dialogue with her using headphones, we have surprised ourselves by going out to exercise while listening to the information she gives us about the questions we ask her. This is a very effective way to learn about any topic that interests us and that we have never experienced with any technology. It's kind of like being able to interact with a podcast.
