Sánchez defends his legitimacy to govern in the face of right-wing protest

"We will govern for all Spaniards, four more years, with progress in favor of the social majority, coexistence and institutional stability". This is the commitment that Pedro Sánchez assures that he will assume with Spanish society, now that he already has a parliamentary majority to endorse the investiture as president of the Spanish Government next week.

Sánchez adopted this commitment yesterday in front of the German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, and the rest of the social democratic leaders gathered at the congress of the European Socialist Party (PES) held in Malaga. And despite the protests of the right against his inauguration pacts, and the riots of the ultra-right – for this very reason –, the plenary session of the congress erupted in a loud ovation when the leader of the PSOE already celebrated his imminent re-election . "Spain will have four more years of progressive government", confirmed Sánchez to the attendees, in English and Spanish, amid great applause.

"This is precisely what the majority of the Spanish people voted for on July 23", he alleged. And he wanted to share his "immense joy" with the social democratic leaders gathered in Málaga, who are hurrying to make a pineapple before the European elections in June.

Sánchez highlighted the importance of the fact that the Spanish elections of 23-J have stopped the irruption of a "reactionary government", formed by the Popular Party and the extreme right of Vox, not only in Spain, but throughout Europe, and recalled how the Swedish social democratic leader Olof Palme raised funds against the Franco dictatorship, or the demonstrations in Paris, Lisbon, Brussels or Bonn against the last executions of Francoism before the transition.

"I do not appeal to those memories by chance", he warned. "These days the most nostalgic ultra-right of that cruel Franco dictatorship exhibits symbols and proclamations of a dark past for Spain that we believe has been overcome, an echo of those who have the complicity of a traditional right already parasitized by the ultra-right", he denounced.

He thus criticized "a right without a north, unable to stand up to the most reactionary ultra-right". And he explicitly addressed the PP, to demand "sanity and measure". Precisely today, Alberto Núñez Feijóo has called demonstrations all over Spain to protest against the investiture agreements, singularly with Catalan independence, to approve an amnesty for those accused of the process.

"What they have to do is accept the result of the polls, the legitimacy of the government that we will soon form in Spain. That they have the necessary courage to say no to the embrace of the bone of the ultra-right and abandon the reactionary path by which they are advancing towards the abyss today", he recommended to the PP, once again amidst loud applause.

The leader of the PSOE insisted on the fact that, with their vote on 23-J, the citizens pointed out that "Spain can only be governed if its political pluralism and territorial diversity are recognized".

"The PP only understands and can only agree with the ultra-right of Vox, with no one else", he stressed. Instead, he emphasized that the PSOE can agree with all the political forces, "except for Vox". In fact, the PSOE itself, Sumar, Esquerra, Junts, Bildu, the PNB, the BNG and Coalició Canària have already spoken out in favor of his investiture. The bloc is not only made up of the PP, Vox and UPN.

"The new government will predictably go ahead next week with the support of 179 seats out of the 350 deputies that make up the Cortes", said Sánchez. And he defended its legitimacy, despite accusations from the right. "All of them are legitimate representatives of the popular will", he warned. "With this strength and the legitimacy that gives us the fact of being able to agree with everyone", he reiterated his commitment that, as he assured that he has been doing since he arrived in Moncloa five years ago, he will govern "for all Spaniards". "Spain, today more than ever, owns its future and is not a slave to its past", concluded Sánchez.

The PSOE is now completing the registration in Congress, "as soon as possible", of the amnesty law. The organizing secretary of Ferraz, Sants Cerdán, assured that the legislative initiative has already been transferred to the parliamentary allies to sign it. He insisted that the rule will not refer to the judicial war that Junts highlighted in the political agreement. "We are not talking about lawfare on the part of the PSOE", he reiterated, following the fire in all judicial associations.

Regarding the right-wing protests, which also wanted to be heard in front of the Congress Palace in Malaga where the congress was held, Cerdán pointed out who, in his opinion, lit the fuse: "Aznar has a lot of responsibility ".
