IU demands primaries from Sumar whom it sees in a "deadlock" in the run-up to the European elections

Izquierda Unida (IU) has demanded that Sumar hold primaries for the configuration of a joint European candidacy "if it is not capable of leading the process." The negotiations are "at a stalemate," diagnosed the party's spokesperson Ismael González, who regretted that the coalition led by Yolanda Díaz "fails to unite the demands" of all the parties.

"It is necessary to close as soon as possible a process that is taking a long time (...) We have mechanisms to accelerate the process if Sumar is not capable of leading it," the federal head of organization warned this Monday in a press conference. And to accelerate the conversations, Izquierda Unida has encouraged the rest of the organizations integrated into Sumar, such as Compromís or the commons to "sit down and talk" to "set up a list", since they consider that Sumar "takes people off the table."

The call has not stopped there, and in view of the stagnation of the space on the left of the PSOE, González has called on Podemos to participate in a "process of recomposition of the transformative left in our country."

Although González has avoided talking about starting positions and dates, the party urges Sumar to reach an agreement "as soon as possible" and to allow "the militancy to speak if necessary" through an internal democratic procedure.

Regarding the internal primaries of IU, González has assured that the three candidates who have shown their willingness to lead the formation are willing to present a joint proposal and that "there is a good atmosphere" in the negotiation.

In this sense, IU has announced that they are considering proposals for a change in the organization that would increase "the decision-making power of the territories", although González has ruled out that they are working on a reform of the structure of the federal leadership.

The spokesperson has assured that this week talks will intensify to reach an agreement before the Federal Assembly on May 18, where the new representative body of IU will be elected.
