David Torrents will be the candidate for the organization secretary of Junts per Catalunya again. Jordi Turull, general secretary of the formation, had to appoint a person for that key position in the leadership before July 4 so that he could be put on trial for militancy, after Torrents himself stayed out in the congress of Argelers by narrowly missing the 50% vote threshold.
The deputy of the Parlament Ester Vallès, in the same circumstance, had also been relegated and will have a new opportunity. Both were proposed by the president of the formation, Laura Borràs, for the executive.
On the other hand, the former deputy Lluís Guinó is the person chosen to replace the ex-minister of Interior Miquel Sàmper, who had to resign to be part of the management of Junts because he already participates in the Legal Advisory Commission of the Generalitat.
In order to settle the matter as soon as possible, although there was a month to spare, the JxCat militants will vote from next Wednesday morning until Thursday at noon, and they will vote yes or no, without taking into account percentages, unlike what happened in the conclave. In addition, the three names will be chosen en bloc; each of them will not be voted on separately, as was done in the congress. In the regulation to renew the direction approved by the bases it was stipulated that the general secretary, if the organization secretary did not enter, had to propose a “new candidate” to the bases.
Last week, the possibility of reappointing Torrents, councilor in Badalona, was discussed at the executive meeting, but there were those who took a position against it. However, Turull has ultimately opted for him to respect the agreement with Borràs, since, in his opinion, “the balance had been unbalanced”. “I want to be consistent with the purpose” of the unitary project, the pro-independence leader affirmed yesterday at a press conference. "For me it is essential to maintain balance, that I had names and surnames," he concluded later.
Thus, in a letter, he asked the members for a vote of confidence for the candidates. "I am a person of my word and I want to submit it again to the consideration of the militancy, which has all the freedom to vote for or against this proposal," Turull explained about repeating two names that were rejected in a first vote.
Guinó comes from Convergència and PDECat, and was disqualified for his role in the Bureau of Parliament in the 1-O referendum. At the beginning of this legislature he was an adviser to Borràs in the presidency of the Catalan Chamber, and since July last year he has been an adviser to Councilor Jordi Puigneró in the Department of Digital and Territorial Policies.
