The Municipal Police of Madrid have rescued an 85-year-old woman who was crammed among garbage and animals in poor condition in the apartment of her daughter and her partner, in the district of Arganzuela, who are being investigated for an alleged crime of abandonment by lack of care for an elderly person.

The elderly woman, who disappeared from the residence where she lived after a visit from her daughter, was weak, disoriented and in very poor hygienic conditions, sitting in a chair from which she could not get up, the Municipal Police reported.

All the rooms of the home were full of discarded belongings, garbage and food remains that gave off a strong odor, which is why the agents suspect that it could be compatible with Diogenes syndrome.

In addition, the couple had a cage with many pigeons in poor health and five cats that did not have any space prepared for them to relieve themselves.

Due to the state of both the elderly woman and the animals, the couple is being investigated as allegedly responsible for crimes of abandonment due to lack of care for the elderly and animal abuse.

The intervention took place on September 27 after the residence where the octogenarian lived reported her disappearance after a visit from her daughter.

Agents from the Support and Protection of Women, Minors and Seniors police station, after a complex follow-up to locate the woman, found her at the Arganzuela home.

When no one opened the door, they proceeded to open it with the help of the Madrid fire extinguishing service, given that the agents had judicial authorization.

Inside the house they found the missing woman, her 45-year-old daughter and her partner.

The SAMUR-Civil Protection health services moved the elderly woman to temporary accommodation until she can return to the residence where she previously lived.
