Passengers taking flights at El Prat airport will begin to notice changes in boarding access from 2024. The burdensome regulations of removing liquids and electronic devices from suitcases every time they pass security control will become the history.
This was confirmed this Tuesday by the director of Barcelona airport, Eva Valenzuela, in a meeting with the media to evaluate the last year. Aena had already announced at the beginning of the year that this requirement would end in the main Spanish airports thanks to the implementation of the new security control machines.
These are new x-ray scanners that generate high-resolution 3D images that allow luggage to be inspected without opening it. This will save travelers time and inconvenience and speed up the access process in the boarding areas, especially in high season.
In the case of the Josep Tarradellas airport, Valenzuela has provided more details in this regard. The measure will begin to be implemented in T2 before the summer and will then be extended progressively to T1. "It is an important change. The security control is one of the points that generates the most friction for the passenger."
Traveler traffic in El Prat in November exceeded for the first time the figures of its previous highest record (2019), before the pandemic: up to 3.8 million, 4.3% more than the same month of the year before the outbreak of covid-19. This year the airport has offered 50 destinations to other continents compared to 47 in 2019.
