Alert for the strong winds and rains brought by the storm 'Ciarán' today

The effects of the storm Ciarán will begin to be noticed especially from this afternoon with fronts that will enter the northwest of the peninsula and will bring heavy rainfall occasionally accompanied by storms in Galicia, the Cantabrian area and the Pyrenees.

In addition, the rainfall will spread to the rest of the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands, although with less intensity towards the south and the Mediterranean area and without affecting the southeast of the peninsula, according to the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet).

In total, 48 provinces will be on alert throughout the day for rain, wind or strong waves. This last risk will be important on the coasts of Catalonia, Galicia (with a red alert in A Coruña), Asturias, Murcia, the Balearic Islands, Ceuta, Melilla, Murcia and various provinces of the Basque Country and the Valencian Community. The four provinces of Galicia will also have a rain warning, which could collect up to 40 liters per m2.

However, the most relevant phenomenon throughout the day will be the strong westerly wind, with very strong gusts (over 70 km/h) quite generally and that could reach 90 km/h in large areas of the country. north, interior of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands, and even exceeding 100 km/h in high areas and especially in points of the Cantabrian coast and areas of the east and southeast of the peninsula.

With the entry of a colder air mass, temperatures will also drop. The minimum temperatures will decrease in the northwest half of the peninsula, with frost in the Pyrenees and weak temperatures in other mountains in the north and southeast. No major changes are expected in the maximums, Aemet predicts.

Consequently, the snow level will also drop significantly, reaching between 1,200 and 1,400 meters in the northern half of the peninsula, so the first snowfalls can be expected in the mountain systems, although not significant.
