The painter Antoni Vives Fierro died this Wednesday in Barcelona at the age of 83, according to family sources. The artist, awarded the Creu de Sant Jordi in 2002, will be buried this Thursday in the privacy of his family.

His daughter, also an artist Claudia Vives-Fierro, recalled for La Vanguardia that her father "was a very socially recognized painter, an urban landscape painter who portrayed the most emblematic corners of Barcelona such as the Liceo, the Palau de la Música, the Mill , Barceloneta... In the 80s he began to paint the Eixample, claiming that Barcelona."

Trained at the Sant Lluc Artistic Circle, where he was a student of Josep Maria Garrut and the sculptor Tomàs Bel, Antoni Vives Fierro also portrayed other cities in the world such as Paris, London, Havana, Tokyo, Madrid, Geneva and Venice.

Between September and November of last year, an exhibition was organized at the Palau Robert in Barcelona, ​​a tour of his extensive work that was attended by up to 17,000 people. "Although he was already in poor health, he was able to participate in the exhibition," recalls his daughter.

In addition to his role as an urban painter, Vives Fierro also stood out for his portraits, capturing the essence of many people both in Barcelona and throughout Catalonia. In 1997 he received the award from the Generalitat for the design of the Joia de la Sardana.
