The OCU warns that Spaniards do without these basic products that are already almost luxury

The shopping basket is becoming more and more expensive. Inflation registered its third month of rise in September, placing its annual rate at 3.5%, almost one percentage point more than in August; and 54.8% of the products that make up the consumer price index (CPI) experienced a price increase in September.

This harsh situation has had an impact on the budgets of families in our country, who each month face a shopping basket that is more expensive than the previous one. Among the products most affected by inflation, olive oil stands out, although it is not the only one.

As the Organization of Consumers and Users (OCU) has pointed out, there is another group of foods that Spaniards have stopped buying due to inflation: fish.

The study carried out by the OCU reveals that this food has been especially affected by inflation, with 60% of consumers buying less quantity and 19% opting for lower quality fish.

However, fish is not the only basic food that has become a luxury, since the problem extends to more groups. The OCU indicates that 54% of those surveyed have reduced the purchase of meat, 53% of olive oil, 50% of fruit, 45% of fresh vegetables and 30% of dairy products.

In this situation, the OCU recommends consuming foods of plant origin and proteins of plant origin to maintain a balanced diet, since opting for cheaper alternatives from the same group can affect the quality of our diet.
