The Montjuïc dance festival moves to spring (here a guide)

Montjuïc (or Via Montjuïc) emerged as a festival that brought dance and movement closer to new audiences while proposing to venture into the open-air spaces of the Barcelona mountain and even enjoy some corners that, due to lack of lighting or cleaning, they were out of circulation. Of those wills, above all, dance has remained. The City Council has taken the event as a way of promoting Montjuïc and, with the collaboration of El Graner, has brought this third edition forward to spring (with what is extra in the risk of rain).

This weekend of May 20 and 21, the festival seeks to challenge that population that feels excluded from body language due to the fact that it generally takes place in the temples of performing arts. The initiative that seeks to give access to culture with companies such as Los Informalls, Joan Català, Manolo Alcántara, Quim Bigas or Lara Brown.

The edition had been warming up the previous Saturdays, on May 7 and 13, with Montjuïc al Barri. This Saturday, the 20th, the Basque company LaSala will be in charge of inaugurating the party with the piece Fight, which will be seen on the terrace of the parade ground, one of the various spaces of the Castell that houses a large part of the programming.

The action will then move to the horn, where Los Informalls will propose an Aperitif. And again on the terrace, Joan Català will show Pelat. The day will close with the Metaplec, a choral improvisation, with the will to permanence, in which artists from different careers participate: Gloria Ros, David Climent, Marina Pravkina, Adriano Galante and Hoss Benítez.

The choice of pieces not only seeks to make dance accessible to everyone, but also to carry out residences, process openings (both creative and community) and even a children's workshop.

Thus, since April there have been artists-in-residence who are now presenting the results of their study on the significance of space and the active participation of citizens. Well, the festival believes in the capacity of the languages of the body, movement and live arts to "build a proposal for access to culture for all". In the bowels of the Castell, the creations Yukedo Yukedo, by Park Keito, will be seen on Saturday, and on Sunday, Bailar o lo salvaje, by Lara Brown.

The Castell de Montjuïc has thus entered into dialogue with the Dance and Live Arts Creation Factory, El Graner, which mediates so that the chosen languages are adequate to build, in unique spaces, "new experiences around the arts and culture".

Sunday the 21st begins with a morning session, which will take place between Maña, de la cía. Manolo Alcántara, and the piece Moving!, by María Ferrer, a collaboration with the Civic Center of Sortidor with the participation of young people who have just arrived in Poble-sec, which highlights the dual community and territorial aspect. The creation in residence will be the opening of the process of Project K with K of collectivity, by Sputniks Cia, a joint proposal between the Ateneu Popular 9 Barris and the Castle itself, in the framework of Creation and Museums.

The afternoon will feature Otempodiz (“Diueltemps”), from the company. Ertza, and Meohadim, from the company. Jacob Gómez, both on the terrace, while Molar, by Quim Bigas, will be seen on the parade ground. In parallel, in the chapel, a documentary on the creation process of Otempodiz can be seen, entitled You have the clocks, we have the Time.... Previously, in the morning, the dancers Deissane Machava and Fenias Nhumai, from Ertza , will offer the Mozambican Marrabenta and Machawona dance workshop for children from 9 to 12 years old.

The day, and the festival, will close with the resumption of Castells on the air, by Raquel Klen and Raquel Gualtero, the Creació i Museus 2021 project between the Caldera and the Castell. A piece thought, lived and executed in the equipment, which values it and will return to put an end to this edition of Montjuïc.
