Scabies in dogs: symptoms and treatment

Among the many diseases and pathologies that a dog can contract due to ectoparasites is mange. It is a serious condition that makes our four-legged best friend suffer a lot, so we must pay attention to its prevention and symptoms, in order to treat it as soon as possible if it appears.

This disease is caused by a mite, a microscopic parasite that infects the animal's skin, causing it to itch and sting very unpleasantly. There are different types depending on the causative mite and scabies is highly contagious and can be transmitted between dogs, other animals and even humans.

In addition, the way scabies is spread and its treatment vary depending on the type and the causative mite. The dog can contract scabies by contact with another infected dog, or by its objects also infested by mites. Poor hygiene, poor quality food or malnutrition, as well as low defenses are other risk factors for our pet to become infected.

If not intervened in time, scabies can lead to other infections and diseases. It could even cause the death of the animal. Therefore, going to the vet as soon as possible is of the utmost importance.

The treatment of scabies in dogs is simple, but you have to be constant and complete the cycle prescribed by the veterinarian, never abandon it prematurely. This process may require cutting the animal's hair to better locate the infection, as well as bathing with a medicalized shampoo and anti-mite lotions.

The administration of medication and acaricides by topical, oral or even injection route will also be prescribed. In some cases it is necessary to take anti-inflammatories and analgesics to alleviate the discomfort of the dog.
