Patricia Fernández, 'booktoker': "If young people do not read, it is because of how culture is transmitted"

"Young people no longer read" is a statement with which Patricia Fernández cannot agree. This 25-year-old journalist has created a community on TikTok with thousands of teenagers waiting for her videos on literature, writers' lives and culture in general. It is what is known as a ‘booktoker’.

"I start from the premise that writers have to be taken down from the pedestal," admits Fernández in a conversation with 'La Vanguardia' that you can see on these lines. And for this reason, he talks about Lorca, the Brontë sisters or Sylvia Plath with the same tone as Shakira or Julia Roberts: naturally, with a sense of humor and constant references to pop culture.

Fernández's passion for literature goes beyond the screens. In autumn, the journalist will publish her third book, a collection of poems that she has been working on for years and for which she has had to "isolate" herself for a few seasons. "Poetry and TikTok go at completely different rhythms," she confesses, although for her the main thing is to remain linked to literature, in whatever way.

On the occasion of World Book Day, the writer encourages all adolescents and young people to pick up a book: "Reading opens your mind, makes you more tolerant, makes you see how ignorant you were and how ignorant you still are."
