Mercadona explains why there is a lack of melons and watermelons in the supermarket this summer

Watermelon is one of the most coveted summer fruits for being a most refreshing food, rich in water and salts. Melon is also in great demand, which is grown mostly outdoors at this time. In addition, it hydrates us in the face of heat thanks to its very high contribution of water.

However, it is not being easy to find watermelons or melons in some supermarkets, specifically in Mercadona. The chain admits that it is having problems with the supply of these products due to "weather conditions", although it assures that it only affects some stores.

"Due to the adverse weather suffered in the watermelon and melon-producing areas, we currently do not have the ability to offer the product normally. Therefore, there may be lack of service in some of our stores, we are sorry for the inconvenience," Mercadona explained in a response. to a client on Twitter.

The user complained that she usually "shops once a week and there have been no melons or watermelons for two weeks now: "I'll have to go shopping elsewhere," she pointed out.

Some agricultural organizations such as the Association of Young Farmers (Asaja) ensure that "the shortage of watermelons in supermarkets" responds to the cut in water resources from the Tajo-Segura transfer that mainly affects crops in the southeast of the peninsula.

In addition, they explain that the few watermelons that have been planted have been lost due to the alteration of flowering due to the extreme heat in April, encouraged by climate change, and the heavy rains in May in the province of Alicante.
