How to choose the best feeder and waterer for your dog

When we make the decision to have a dog, we must prepare everything necessary to meet its needs. This involves choosing the accessories to take him for a walk – harness or collar, as well as a leash –, purchasing a bed where he can rest, getting various toys to keep him entertained and, of course, buying a feeder and a water bowl.

Dogs must have fresh water at all times, so they can drink whenever they need it. In the case of food, in some cases they will be offered three servings a day, other times two, and there are even those who choose to reduce it to one. To this end, choosing the feeder and waterer is not a matter to be taken lightly. Although it may seem basic, there are certain aspects to take into account to ensure you find the most suitable one for your four-legged best friend.

First of all, you have to assess the size of your dog. Large dogs will need larger bowls, while small dogs can settle for smaller ones. In this regard, if your dog is large, you can opt for a high feeder and waterer, so that he does not have to bend down so much to access its contents. Likewise, if your dog has a long snout, the container should be deeper than for those with a flat nose.

On the other hand, the material is another fundamental aspect. The most common are made of plastic, ceramic or stainless steel, each of which has certain advantages and disadvantages. Plastic is more manageable, resistant and easy to clean, but it tips over easily and the dog can chew on it. Additionally, some dogs are allergic to this material.

Ceramic bowls are more difficult for the animal to move, but they break easily. Therefore, stainless steel is best, as it is resistant and easy to clean. Look for one with a non-slip surface, to prevent it from tipping over accidentally.

If your dog eats too eagerly, opt for an anti-voracity feeder, which forces him to eat more slowly and thus prevents the food from making him feel bad. Likewise, if it is difficult for him to drink water, a drinking fountain with a flow rate that keeps the water constantly moving can encourage him to drink more. You can also find drinkers with systems to prevent splashing.

Other options are feeders and waterers with a hopper dispenser or programmer, which are very useful if you are not going to be home at the time your pet has to eat. Of course, make sure that they only release the appropriate ration so that your dog does not get stuffed.
