Buika: “I spent much of my youth hating my voice”

Concha Buika's voice is unmistakable, a style in itself that is difficult to imitate. “It has an unusual color and a very broad texture,” Pedro Almodóvar said of it. “It is pure passion, with a beautiful texture,” said Alicia Keys, who also confessed to being a faithful listener of the artist. However, for Concha Buika her voice “is a mystery.” What's more, she reveals that for years, she had a lot of obsession with him. When she was a child, a choir director told her that she had “the voice of a dog.” “I spent a large part of my youth hating my voice,” says the singer in a telephone conversation with La Vanguardia. Today, at 51 years old, with eight studio albums published and in the middle of a world tour, Buika remembers this anecdote with a laugh. “That teacher didn't consider that dogs have a beautiful voice.”

The singer-songwriter, poet and producer of her own compositions returns to Barcelona to perform on November 5 at the Paral·lel 62 room, together with the DJ and music producer Kiko Navarro. She will do so within the framework of the twenty-five years of the Mil·lenni Festival, which brings together an extensive program with concerts of various styles in the most characteristic halls of the city. “The public in Barcelona is wonderful, I like it a lot,” confesses the Mallorcan artist who travels with her music all over the world.

Buika has explored and fused a wide variety of musical genres throughout his career including flamenco, jazz, Latin music and blues, among others. “The only gender there is is the sense of taste for music.” Her songs are impossible to pigeonhole, which makes her versatile and capable of reaching diverse audiences. For Buika, music is a universal language, “it doesn't matter what language it is sung in.” She recently toured the stages of Mexico, Turkey, Brazil, the United Arab Emirates and the Dominican Republic. “I have seen it in different countries, people get emotional at the same moments in the songs.” This is where, according to the artist, the magic of art lies.

Silence is the new single that the singer released with the DJ and producer Kiko Navarro. It will be one of the songs they will perform live this Sunday, within a wide repertoire that they have been producing for a long time. It is the first time that both artists will take the stage together.

“I have come here to succeed and I am proud of NASA, no satellite is going to come and calm me down.” Every sentence she utters spreads conviction and optimism. As for the future, she chooses not to speak out so as not to become a slave to her words, since she recognizes herself as a “very contradictory” person. The only thing she can assure is that she is very eager to return to the Catalan stage; She doesn't feel nervous at all. “I couldn't be nervous in front of my family.”
