Absolute theater record in Barcelona, with 2.8 million spectators in 2023

"2023 has been the best year in the history of Barcelona's theaters," announced Isabel Vidal, president of Adetca, the association that welcomes theater companies in Catalonia. "And the Christmas campaign has been really good."

The last record year was 2011 with 2,816,283 spectators. Today, after a crisis, a pandemic and a few wars, 2,845,015 viewers have been registered, which represents an increase of 1.02%. The collection is also the highest since there are records: 86 million euros. Data is collected since 1993.

Although there are always star shows, Vidal has emphasized the fact that the record has been achieved thanks to the fact that all the theaters have registered an increase in occupancy, which stands at an average of 60.43%.

In fact, theaters with less than 200 spectators have also broken their own record, with 305,413 spectators and 4 million euros in revenue.

The mythical figure of three million is approaching, a fact predicted by Xavier Marcé, from the Barcelona City Council. The Secretary of State for Culture of the ministry, Jordi Martí, has assured that work will continue on the Patronage law and that the precariousness of the sector will be fought with the Artist Statute.

And the Minister of Culture, Natàlia Garriga, has promised to reach 2% of the Culture budget at the end of the legislature. "The increase for culture with 1.5% has already meant 180% more," she said.
