Types of barbecue and how to choose the perfect one for my terrace or garden

The good weather opens the season to spend more moments outside. It is time to fine-tune the terrace or garden, in order to make it the meeting point for you and your guests during the coming spring and summer months. In addition to equipping the space with vegetation, chairs or the occasional hammock, there is an object that will add value to your terrace, balcony, porch, patio or garden: a barbecue.

They are perfect for cooking meat, fish and vegetables with that characteristic grilled and smoky flavor. Ideal for celebrating lunch or dinner and enjoying around a table full of delicacies. There are several types of barbecues to choose from, so you can find the one that best suits your specific needs, preferences and the space you have.

The built-in barbecue is the most traditional and classic. They are made with refractory brick and its main advantage is that you can build it as you wish. Choose the place where you will place it, the size, the shape and its aesthetics, without losing sight of the fact that it is safe, solid and well insulated.

Built-in barbecues are perfect for large gardens and families with many diners and guests, as they have more capacity. Also, while they tend to be more expensive, they are of better quality and have a longer lifespan if you take good care of them. This involves cleaning them properly and protecting the grill in the cold months. Another point in favor is that you can light them with both coal and firewood. And, thanks to its elongated chimney, the smoke is better dispersed upwards.

On the other hand, we have mobile charcoal barbecues. They usually incorporate wheels and are much smaller than construction ones, although there are several sizes to choose from depending on the space you have. You can also opt for a round, square or rectangular. Their main advantage is that they are comfortable and practical, ideal for small terraces.

When fed on charcoal or wood, they boast that authentic smoky flavor, but they are also dirtier and smokey. Keep this in mind when it comes to maintenance, as well as to prevent the smell of smoke from being annoying on the terrace, entering your home or disturbing the neighbours.

Similar to the previous one, also smaller and more portable, but in this case powered by gas. They are very convenient for small spaces, easy to move and store when you don't need them thanks to their wheels. Likewise, you can find them in different sizes and distributions (round, rectangular, with extendable tables…).

Its main point in favor is that they ignite faster than coal ones, they are cleaner and they give off less smoke. In any case, thanks to the fact that they usually incorporate a lid to close the grill, they retain that delicious smoky flavor.

If you do not have much space, you can opt for an electric barbecue or a plug-in grill. They are small, practical, versatile and easy to operate, light and clean.
