The rule of thirds: the simple style trick to look better

Social networks are a more than interesting space for anyone interested in fashion and styling. Especially because new viral style tricks continually emerge on TikTok, the platform that reigns in this field, with which to give a twist to the clothes in your closet. One of those that is gaining more presence is that of the rule of thirds. Although it is not exactly something new or something that came out of nowhere, it is worth noting the popularity it has recently garnered thanks to the countless profiles that are talking about it and explaining what it consists of.

Fashion gives rise to exploring different combinations of clothing, playing with silhouettes, colors and textures. However, there are those who prefer to give it a more functional use or use them to get the most out of their body. To achieve this, different very effective tricks can be used. One of them is the rule of thirds, which makes it easy to design flattering outfits.

The rule of thirds explains that the body is divided into three differentiable parts. One of them is the one that includes the space between the shoulders and the navel. The second goes from the navel to the knees. And, the last, from the knees to the feet. Once a mental division of these three regions is made, it is possible to understand this trick, focused on achieving outfits that are proportionate.

What the rule of thirds says is that you have to combine the items of clothing so that this division into three is respected. With proportions that allocate one third for the upper part and two for the lower part or two for the upper part and another for the lower part. The result is that the body is visually lengthened and a more harmonious and proportionate silhouette is obtained. Therefore, the natural beauty of the figure is enhanced.

On the other hand, the usual division between top and bottom makes it much easier to fall into combinations that are not flattering. A very clear example of this would be taking as an example a look that consists of a white t-shirt and high-waisted jeans. Nothing flashy. However, the effect will greatly change depending on how the shirt is worn.

If you let it go outside your pants, it will be approximately at hip height. Thus breaking the rule of three thirds and resulting in a flat, boring look. On the other hand, it will be very different if you choose to tuck your shirt into your pants. Which will stylize the silhouette much more as the rule of thirds is being followed.
