Shakira lands in Barcelona to face her trial for tax fraud

After an unforgettable night in which Shakira shone at the Latin Grammys, winning three awards, the Colombian singer faces one of the most important moments of her life. Shakira is now back in Barcelona to face an imminent court date.

Next Monday, November 20, in the Barcelona Court, the trial will begin that could mark a turning point for her and her family. Shakira is accused of defrauding the Spanish Treasury of 14.5 million euros, with a possible sentence of eight years and two months in prison. Therefore a decisive moment for the singer, who has landed in Barcelona accompanied by her brother Tonino and her children Milan and Sasha.

The circumstances surrounding his arrival in the Catalan capital reflect the seriousness of the situation. Surrounded by her family, Shakira entered her house in a van with tinted windows, avoiding questions from journalists. As if that were not enough, Gerard Piqué, father of her children, appeared to pick up the children.

The trial against Shakira will last for 12 days in non-consecutive sessions whose dates could vary depending on how the trial progresses. The singer will have to testify this Monday and, then, the defense will determine if it is necessary for Shakira to continue going to court.

Around 200 witnesses are expected to participate throughout all these sessions, including her ex-partner Antonio de la Rua, service employees, neighbors and professionals linked to her musical career. The objective is to determine if Shakira resided in Spain between 2012 and 2014 and, therefore, she must pay taxes in the country.

The defense of the Colombian singer, led by lawyer Pau Molins, argues that she is innocent, since she did not have a fixed residence in Spain until 2014 and that she has complied with her tax obligations since then.
