Rachel Valdés speaks after her break with Alejandro Sanz: "If I'm not ready, I can be very shy"

Last June was one that was marked in the life of Alejandro Sanz. It was during those first days that the Madrid singer announced that he and his partner Rachel Valdés were separating, after more than three years together. A fact that added to the negative spiral that the artist had to carry for weeks, counting on the support of his followers and his acquaintances to get out of the well. Now, once the obstacle has been overcome, the person involved has spoken.

Valdés spoke for the first time since the breakup this week, in an exclusive interview with Telva magazine. The Cuban artist remained silent since her announcement with Alejandro was made public, focused on presenting her professional projects around the world and resting, sharing several photographs from a stay in Eivissa in recent days. After occupying her mind with work and views from all corners, she has talked about a multitude of topics.

One of the questions that Valdés answered was about his son Max, if he protected him from technological excesses: “I try. Notice what a silly thing that even seems contradictory: I want to give him what I didn't have, but at the same time I don't want him to have everything so that he feels the need to search and make an effort. It's a difficult balance nowadays, where everything is comparative. If this one has an iPad why not me, if the other one has such a video game... I think it is more difficult to be a mother today than thirty years ago”.

A prominent question was about shyness: “If I'm not prepared, I can be very shy. I have to prepare well what I want to say to do it serenely. If I have to improvise in public, I get terribly nervous. But when I have had to do it, it has turned out well. One has to be authentic first and foremost. If you're wrong, you apologize, you laugh and continue. But I prefer to be warned beforehand. They say that the best improvisation is the one that is prepared, right?

Beyond emotional issues, Rachel was also able to express herself about her most artistic side, particularly when she realized it: “Since I can remember. As a child, she had thoughts and wishes that have come true. She collected the pieces of mirrors and glass that she found on the street, to compose figures ”. The painter herself also recognized that when she entered an art academy in Havana, she discovered that she could make a living from art.

In the same way, he also expressed himself about his works and the reflection they transmit to others: “Like everyone else, but I like to look inward. We almost always look outside. Game with two and three dimensions. I feel more and more comfortable in this reality. I am two and sometimes three. I accept it, I can't fight with myself anymore. Before I tried to explain or justify myself, but not anymore. I like the ramifications that art takes me through.”
