Olympic judoka Maricet Espinosa González dies at 34

The sports world is in mourning. Judoka Maricet Espinosa González died on January 22 at the age of 34 in her native Cuba due to a heart attack while undergoing cosmetic surgery on her breasts.

Those responsible for the Cuban Sports University were the first to announce the tragic news through their social networks. "It is with great pain that the Cuban university sports community receives the news of the death of the outstanding Cuban judoka Maricet Espinosa González."

"At only 34 years old, La mole, born in the capital and who stood out as a member of our national judo team, went to eternity, achieving two titles and a Pan American silver, all in the 63kg category. On behalf of our teachers, workers and students extend our deepest condolences to their families, friends and colleagues."

A condolence that was joined by the Pan American Judo Confederation of Cuba, who also paid a small tribute to the two-time world champion and medalist through their Instagram account.

"It is with deep sadness that we say goodbye to a legend of Pan-American and Cuban judo. Maricet Espinosa, affectionately known as La Mole, leaves an indelible legacy. Rest in peace, dear Maricet. Our condolences to her family and to Cuban judo. Your spirit and your achievements will always endure."

Maricet Espinosa González was born in Havana, Cuba, and was one of the greatest representatives of the sports discipline in her country. She is amazing, she won two gold medals (2013, 2014) and one silver (2016) at the Pan American Games in the 63 kilogram category. She also participated in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
