María del Monte's applauded feminist statement in 'Incredible Duos': “There was a man…”

Dúos Increíbles broadcast a new installment this Tuesday on TVE's La 1, where emotion, music and memories intermingled in a unique evening. So much so that, for the first time, we were able to hear a version of a well-known hit on stage. We are talking about the Sevillian Cántame, which María del Monte popularized decades ago.

Well, as a result of this great musical and television moment on the national public network, María del Monte also became a protagonist by revealing her complicated beginnings in the world of music. Although, above all, because of her applauded feminist statement, she drew applause from the audience on the set.

María del Monte and her group Los surferas sang a version of the iconic Sevillian Cántame in the last installment of Dúos Increíbles. Along with the veteran performer were Famous, Julia Medina and David de María who deployed all the art in the world to musically modify one of the biggest hits in our history.

In fact, the jokes did not wait between them. “From then on I have little left to see,” María joked. In this sense, the singer was referring to how she could not imagine that one of her youngsters would change their style so radically.

“You have never seen a black man with so much art singing sevillanas,” said Famous, laughing. And such was the success of the version of Cántame, that the public accompanied the end with a standing ovation.

“This is how you enjoy Sevillanas, at the hands of the true queen,” exclaimed Xavier Martínez, presenter of Dúos Increíbles. In addition, he wanted to remind the audience that María del Monte is “the person who has sold the most albums of this genre on the planet.” Something that very few knew.

Regarding this topic, Martínez wanted to ask María if it was true that “back in the day there were people who didn't want you to sing Sevillanas.” To which the artist responded with a feminist plea that drew applause from those present.

“There was a man who told me that a woman was no good at singing sevillanas,” said the singer. Then, he made it clear that "it was also said that we were no good for football and we are world champions."
